Since 1997, art historian Anette Freytag has focused on urban design and designed landscapes and has published many papers on these topics. She has been working with Professor Girot since 2005 and wrote her dissertation on the work of Swiss landscape architect Dieter Kienast (1945–1998). It is the first comprehensive and critical presentation of his work and shows its cultural and sociopolitical context of the 1970 – 1990’s. The dissertation was awarded the ETH Medal for Outstanding Scientific Research in 2011 and the Theodor Fischer Prize 2012 for Outstanding Research on the Architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries.

At the chair, Anette Freytag was Senior Lecturer and Head of Research as well as project manager of the Topology project from 2011-2015 and Visiting Lecturer and Doctoral advisor until May 2016. As principal of the office ville.jardin.paysage in Brussels and Zurich she carried out several studies on monuments such as the garden at Stoclet House in Brussels (1905-1911), which was designated a Unesco World Heritage site in 2009, and German First World War cemeteries in Flanders. Anette Freytag is expert member of the ICOMOS-IFLA International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes.

As of July, 2016, Anette has been appointed Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey. From August 2015-June 2016 she worked as Scientific Advisor for Landscape Politics for the Federal Office for Environment at the Swiss Confederation
