Auf Irrwegen. Das Labyrinth zwischen Motiv und Metapher

I thought of a labyrinth of labyrinths, of one sinuous spreading labyrinth that would encompass the past and the future and in some way involve the stars. – Jorge Luis Borges

In this elective course, we will examine our eternal fascination with the labyrinth. On this winding path, we are searching – with both the desire to lose ourselves and a longing to find ourselves. The labyrinth is a disciplinary shapeshifter, which has long appeared in landscape architecture, architecture, literature, and film.

We will begin by investigating its historic, even mythological, roots within these disciplines and end by asking ourselves what relevance this ancient motif may hold within the Digital Era.

A key element of the course is a weekend excursion, which gives each student the opportunity to experience a labyrinth’s complex structure. We will build on these firsthand experiences with a selection of texts and film clips that reflect the labyrinth’s ever-evolving meaning and form.
