Serge Baghdassarians & Boris Baltschun
The sound performance “Bodybuilding” is based on a trip to Rio de Janeiro in December 2010. The three-sided Largo do Guimaraes on the hills of Santa Teresa became the point of reference. It’s name, urban situation and sonic appearance get acoustically triangulated. In a studio setting this field trip into an urban environment becomes a sonic body building. At the end stands a place in ideal shape – an artificial body.
Bodybuilding was originally commissioned by DeutschlandRadio Kultur for their soundart program and was awarded the Karl-Sczuka-Prize for radio art in 2012.
Stage materials: table, mixing desk, computer, stereo pa, microphones, fan, hotplate, espresso maker, cups, portable radio, chicken wings. 60 minutes.
Serge Baghdassarians & Boris Baltschun are artists and musicians based in Berlin and work together regularly since 1999. Their work moves between aether, performance and installation. Most recently they exhibited who “cooks for you who cooks for you all at” the Donaueschinger Musiktage, an installation in which language in the form of audio captchas reveals itself as a place where a correlation system (man / animal / machine) is staged. Also recently, as a commission by documenta 14, they completed the trilogy common cents with a work entitled backing track. This performance turned radio piece reads a one-hundred year old sound recording as an unfinished piece, thus allowing for the production of additional “tracks”, situating it between a mirror for princes from the 17th century and present-day financial instruments.
