Sight and Sound Observations Above the Nev Base Tunnel
The Gotthard Transect project became an opportunity for us to rediscover historic trails that run since antiquity from Erstfeld up to Sedrun, to the Lukamnier Pass and back down to Bodio. It offered a moment of contemplation to our students on what our society has lost in landscape substance and knowledge, to the credo of an ever-increasing cult of speed and efficiency in the valleys down below.
Thanks to the commitment and preparation of the LVML Media Lab team and the students: Céline Baumann, Geraldine Burger, Dimitri Häfliger, Laura Hunziker, Benjamin Müller, Giulia Remonda and Max Spett carefully sampled sound, impressions and images above the imaginary transect line of the new tunnel buried deep beneath their feet. The samples have been carefully edited and reproduced in a series of four sonic and visual tableaux. They give us a small glimpse of all the landscapes we are missing in our present, dystopian world of accelerated movement.
